Despite not
premiering with the bang many had hoped, Mad Max: Fury Road's commercial
success thus far ($100+ million) and almost universal positive reviews have put
the property on the franchise convoy, something that director George Miller is
hoping.
The filmmaker has
stated in more than one occasion that he has stories already in place for the
follow-ups should the studio decide to move forward. Speaking to Jeff Goldsmith
on his The Q&A Podcast, Miller confirmed that and added that the sequel to
Fury Road is titled Mad Max: The Wasteland.
We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened
because with the delays [on Fury
Road] and writing all the backstories, they just expanded.
Putting aside that Fury Road took almost three decades
to get made, the official start of production was nearly three years ago, which
for a $150 million dollar R-rated film is a bit of stretch even it turns out to
be a action masterpiece. So the question is, will the studio bet on Miller's
vision and delivery with a sequel? Depends on the money that the film makes of
course, so it all depends on how much profit the film actually makes, which might
not be as simple as it seems. Besides having to deal with films currently in
theaters, Fury Road will have to navigate through the Poltergeist remake, Brad
Bird's sci-fi Tomorrowland, and the disaster flick San Andreas starring Dwayne Johnson,
which will premiere this month and might steal some of Miller's creation
box-office spotlight.
Then there is also those involved with the project.
Charlize Theron already stated that Fury Road was a particular tough shoot. Tom
Hardy formally apologized to the director for wanting to know everything on a "minute-by-minute"
basis, when the director was making sure that not only things were ready for
the complex and long driving sequences, but that everyone was safe doing them,
and Miller already stated that he's exhausted from the whole thing.
