After the '60s, the
'70s, and the upcoming '80s, the X-Men franchise will take another leap in time
and land in the '90s to tell another story focused on the mutant struggle.
According to
franchise screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg, the next X-Men sequel will
follow the pattern first started in X-Men: First Class ('60s), followed by
X-Men: Days of Future Past ('70s), and continued in the upcoming X-Men:
Apocalypse ('80s), and jump a whole decade forward into the future.
"The next one is
set in the '90s," Kinberg told ComingSoon.
Kinberg's comment can
be read in one of two ways. Does he mean the next X-Men movie or Josh Boone's still
in development spinoff, New Mutants? We'll have to wait for clarification.
The X-Men comic
franchise reached a new popularity high in the '90s. Jim Lee's iconic character
redesigns remain some of the most memorable in X-Men history, partially due to
their use in the popular Saturday morning cartoon, X-Men: The Animated Series.
Boone's New Mutants will feature a team teen mutants including Magik (Colossus sister), Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot (who we saw be played by Adan Canto in DoFP), and Warlock. Recent reports claim Alexandra Shipp and James McAvoy will reprise their roles as Storm and Professor X, respectively.
