It looks like no
other hands other than those of Ridley Scott's will be touching the Alien film
franchise for the foreseeable future.
Back when Prometheus was
being released, and he was doing the press rounds for it, Scott teased possible
sequels to the then not-Alien prequel. However, because his attention was
somewhere else on other projects such as the critically panned The Counselor,
and Exodus: Gods and Kings, another filmmaker stepped in with his own ideas for
the franchise.
As Chappie was about
the hit theaters, Neil Blomkamp shared some artwork for Alien 5, a new installment
in the franchise, which would have brought back Sigourney Weaver's Ripley and
Michael Biehn's Hicks, in what would was being sold as a "spiritual" sequel
to James Cameron's 1986 Aliens.
20th Century Fox
apparently approved, and set things in motion with Scott attached as a producer.
Unfortunately, for Blomkamp however, once news of Alien 5 got out, Scott put
the Prometheus sequel into high-gear, later confirming that Blomkamp's Alien project
had been postponed until the release of Alien: Covenant.
Now, speaking to
Allocine, Scott reveals that Fox decided to not pick up Blomkamp's pitch for a
new Alien film after all.
"There was never
a screenplay, just an idea that evolved into a pitch of 10 pages…I was always
just a producer, but it didn’t go any further because Fox decided that it
didn’t want to do it."
It's unclear why Fox
decided not to pursue Alien 5, but for what it's worth Weaver had nothing but
praise to say about Blomkamp's idea for Alien 5.
But, the Alien
franchise is still alive and well, and will continue to be so if Scott manages
to have his way and add three more sequels to the prequels that will eventually
connect to Alien.
For his next project,
Scott is set to direct All the Money in the World, a crime-drama starring Mark
Wahlberg, Michelle Williams, and Kevin Spacey. As for Blomkamp, he has yet to
announce his next project.
