Post-The Martian, it
is hard to stay angry at Ridley Scott for pushing Neil Blomkamp's Alien movie further
down the calendar. However, it is a fact that had he not come along and
demanded that his Alien: Covenant would be released first, Blomkamp's spiritual
sequel to Aliens starring Sigourney Weaver would have already been in
production for some time since it was scheduled to open in theaters in 2017.
The actress recently
dropped by VMware, where she was asked about the status of the project, which
Scott confirmed not too long ago that it will head in into production once Covenant
is done.
"Well, I think it is. Ridley asked Neill not to
make our Alien ’til after ‘Prometheus 2.’ [Ridley] wanted his movie to
shoot and be released first. But it’s an amazing script, and Neill and I are
really excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going
on that. I’d be really surprised if we didn’t do it, because it’s such a great
script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit
longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait."
Alien: Covenant picks up 10
after Prometheus, and sees the crew of the colony ship Covenant discover
what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous
world, whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender),
a survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. Covenant also stars
Katherine Waterston, Demian Bichir, Danny McBride, Carmen Ejogo, Billy Crudup,
Jussie Smollett, Amy Seimetz, and Callie Hernandez.
Blomkamp's untitled
Alien movie however, will see Weaver reprising her iconic Ripley role, Michael
Biehn also reprising his role as Corporal Dwayne Hicks, and a twenty-something-year-old
Newt.
