Now that the X-Men franchise timeline has been
virtually erased and open to completely new opportunities, it could be a good
time to re-explore The Dark Phoenix Saga storyline from the comics, which Bryan
Singer teased in X2, and director Brett Rattner completely mangled in X-Men:
The Last Stand.
"The full Phoenix story, I have no idea,"
the filmmaker told SlashFilm. "I would have to re-explore that. If it’s
already been explored, to re-explore and retell it. Plus the Phoenix story in
the comic book has the Shi’ar Empire and the moon."
Yet, despite his reluctance in going back and rectify
that part of the franchise, Singer teases that we might see something in X-Men:
Apocalypse and perhaps more.
"With that you never know," Singer said when
asked about having to go to space and introducing the Celestials if he was to do The Dark Phoenix Saga story. "But as
far as the idea of that brewing within her, without giving anything away I
would say absolutely that interests me and you may find a piece of that in this
film."
Opening on May 27, X-Men:
Apocalypse stars Olivia Munn, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Alexandra Shipp,
Ben Hardy, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan,
Sophie Turner, Evan Peters, Lucas Till, Rose Byrne, Lana Candor, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Josh
Helman, and Tómas Lemarquis.
