Universal Pictures
has finally locked Tom Cruise and Kingsman: The Secret Service breakout actress
Sofia Boutella to star in The Mummy.
The
Mummy is the first movie in Universal's shared cinematic universe centered on
the studio's classic movie monsters. Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are developing the
shared universe for Universal.
Kurztman is also producing and directing The Mummy,
which Jon Spaihts is writing. Plot details are being kept a secret, but unlike the
previous movies starring Brendan Fraser, this new version of The Mummy will
take place in present day.
Cruise won't produce the movie, but
he is however expected to play a significant part in its development. As for Boutella she
will play the titular monster.
The Mummy will open
on June 9, 2017 and not March 24 like it was originally planned.
