Switched at Birth,
and Satisfaction actor Blair Redford is the first to join Fox's X-Men spinoff
drama series.
The yet
untitled series will center on two ordinary parents forced to go on the run
from a hostile government after discovering that their teen children possess
mutant abilities. The family eventually teams with an
underground network of mutants to fight for their right to be.
The actor will play a
mutant named Sam, "the strong-headed Native American leader of the
underground network."
Bryan Singer, who
directed four X-Men movies, will direct the pilot and serve as the series executive
producer along with showrunner Matt Nix, and Fox's Simon Kinberg and Lauren
Shuler Donner, and Marvel's Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.
In a previous interview, Nix
confirmed that the series will inhabit the same universe as the films, but just
tangentially.
"Without getting into specifics that I’ll get murdered for, I would
say that a fan of the movies — particularly the movies but also the comic books
— would not be disoriented as to where this fits in the mythology. If you look
at the movies that take place, they don’t all line up perfectly. So it’s
not like I’m slavishly fitting myself into a particular slot [but] if you like
that world and the world of the movies, there are definite nods to it, it
definitely exists in the same general universe."
