Whether superhero
movies go down the path of the western and eventually fade away or not remains
to be seen, but some, including Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg, believe that
they are starting to saturate the market.
Obviously,
Spielberg's comments didn't go well with fans, and in a surprising turn of
events Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder seems to agree,
but says that it's more of a Marvel problem than a DC problem.
"It goes to the
mythological nature of the movies that we’re making," he said. "I
feel like he’s right. But I feel like Batman and Superman are transcendent of
superhero movies in a way, because they’re Batman and Superman.
They’re not just, like, the flavor of the week Ant-Man—not to be mean, but whatever it
is. What is the next Blank-Man?"
Without being a
Marvel apologist, because I'm really not, I will say that cheap shots are always
a crummy thing to do, but they are particularly tacky when one doesn't have a
solid pulpit (Man of Steel) from where to preach them. See I can do it too!
Changing gears. There
have been some rumors suggesting that Ben Affleck's Batman would have a bigger
role then Henry Cavill's Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Speaking to The Daily Beast,
Snyder confirmed this was indeed the case but mainly for storytelling reasons.
"Only in that because it’s a different Batman
than the Batman that was in the Chris Nolan movies, so we have a little bit
more explaining to do—and you just had a
whole Superman movie," Snyder revealed. "But I think only in that
way, because you need to understand where Batman is with everything. And that’s
more toward the beginning, but it evens back out as it goes on."
With Nolan's Dark Knight still very much alive, it
makes sense that some of BvS runtime will be devoted to establish Ben Affleck
as the new Caped Crusader. The question now is, how much time will be given to set
up the new Batman?
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25,
2016.
