Mary Poppins Returns Official Synopsis

Based on stories by P.L. Travers, production is officially underway in London on Mary Poppins Returns, the follow-up to the 1964 musical classic starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

The new film, which is also being financed by Disney, boasts a script penned by Life of Pi scribe David Magee, and Chicago and Into the Wood filmmaker Rob Marshall sitting behind the camera.

In the story, Poppins (Emily Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family after an all-grown up Michael played by Ben Whishaw, suffers a personal loss.

In addition to Blunt and Whishaw, the cast of Mary Poppins Returns also includes Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks; Lin-Manuel Miranda as an optimistic street lamplighter named Jack; Meryl Streep as Topsy, Mary Poppins' eccentric cousin; Julie Walters as a housekeeper named Ellen; Dick Van Dyke as Mr. Dawes Jr., the chairman of the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, which is run by Colin Firth's character William Weatherall Wilkins.

"Mary Poppins Returns is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep)."

Mary Poppins Returns opens in theaters on December 25, 2018.
