Universal Pictures'
upcoming Scarface remake has hit a snag with the departure of Antoine Fuqua
from the director's chair.
According to sources
close to the situation, Denzel Washington and Sony Pictures want the sequel to
The Equalizer to get off the ground as quickly as possible and need the
acclaimed filmmaker to return and start prepping the film, thus creating a scheduling
conflict with the remake of the classic gangster film.
Despite the loss,
Universal is keen on getting the film in shape for a spring production, and has
already started meeting with directors to replace Fuqua, who wanted to do the
project but ultimately couldn't because of the time he had already invested in
developing the script for The Equalizer 2.
Boardwalk Empire
creator and The Wolf of Wall Street screenwriter Terence Winter penned the most
recent draft, which reimagines the original story told in the 1932 and 1983
films, moving the story from Miami to Los Angeles and focusing on a Mexican
immigrant set to be played by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Diego Luna.
