With more hits then misses
as a filmmaker, everyone was excited to see what Ben Affleck was going to do
behind the camera of Warner Bros.' The Batman. Unfortunately, now we have
learned that Affleck has opted to step down from his role as director.
According to Variety,
Affleck, who is still attached as both a producer and star of the project, spoke
with the studio and both parties came to the decision that it was better for
the actor to solely focus his time on acting, and leave the directing to
someone else.
"There are
certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,"
Affleck said in a statement. "Performing this role demands focus, passion
and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do
both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided
to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive
film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking
for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward
to bringing this to life for fans around the world."
The decision, it
seems, was exclusively based on what the actor and studio think is best for the
project and not on Affleck's disappointing Live by Night, which premiered
earlier in the month to poor reviews.
"Warner Bros.
fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him
to bring a standalone Batman picture to life," the studio said a
statement.
With pre-production scheduled
to start this summer, both Affleck and Warner Bros. will now begin searching
for a new director to step into Affleck's shoes.
One man already
linked with the project is that of War for the Planet of the Apes' helmer Matt
Reeves, whose name sources claim is on the shortlist of directors being
considered for the position.
Affleck, who on
November 17 is set to reprise his Caped Crusader role when Justice League
premieres, made his DCEU debut in last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of
Justice.
