Yahya Abdul-Mateen
II, best known for his starring role as Cadillac on Baz Luhrmann's Netflix series The
Get Down, is joining Jason Momoa in Warner Bros. Aquaman film.
To be directed by
James Wan ("The Conjuring") from a screenplay written by Will Beall ("Castle"),
Aquaman also stars Jason Momoa in the titular role, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem
Dafoe as Vulko, and Patrick Wilson as Orm.
Abdul-Mateen II is set
to play the villainous Black Manta, a character created by Bob Haney and Nick
Cardy in 1967 for Aquaman #35 - Between Two Dooms!
An infamous pirate
and assassin, Black Manta is one of Aquaman's most dangerous enemies.
For the role, Abdul-Mateen
II beat Moonlight breakout star Trevante Rhodes, and 24: Legacy's Corey
Hawkins.
Plot details are
being kept under wraps, but last year Warner teased that the titular character
"would be caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and
the undersea Atlanteans, who are ready to lash out in revolt."
Abdul-Mateen II, who
was on the shortlist of actors to play young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming young
Han Solo spinoff film, will next be seen in Baywatch opposite Dwayne Johnson.
Aquaman opens in
theaters on October 5, 2018.
