Gareth Edwards has
departed from Legendary and Warner Bros. upcoming Godzilla sequel. Edwards, who
directed the first movie for the studio and who was set to return for the
sequel after the completion of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has left the
project due to unknown circumstances.
According to some sources,
the filmmaker wanted a break from working back-to-back on studio tentpoles,
while other claim that the director was feeling pressured to meet a deadline.
Edwards agreed to
helm Godzilla 2 under the provision that he would also be able to work on Rogue
One. However, now that the project has become part of a larger cinematic universe that includes
Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong, the studio is prioritizing the
project.
Legendary and Warner Bros. are now looking for someone to replace the director.
Godzilla 2 opens in
theaters on March 22, 2019.
