With a new season comes a new setting and a new
villain, and for Agent Peggy Carter that means having to deal with Giuletta Kristina
Nefaria, aka Madame Masque in
1940's Hollywood.
Madame Masque is a modern-day villain, meaning that
some adjustments will have to be made in order to successfully transplant the
character into Agent Carter's timeline.
"I think we’ve
changed the look of her a bit obviously. We’ve made her an actress, which is
very Hedy Lamar," said Marvel's
Agent Carter executive producer Tara Butters. "She was a ‘40s siren actress who
was also a scientific genius, so that’s part of what we’re mining with this
character."
The introduction of a
woman as the main villain is a big thing for Marvel, who so far has only had
men as the main villains in both the big and small screens. Part of the thought
process behind it is that it will open up new storytelling possibilities and
challenges. Moreover, "having a female villain
is just as equally powerful" as having a female hero.
