Coming off of directing the box office juggernaut that
was American Sniper, Clint Eastwood gets to pick from the piles of in development
projects currently waiting for someone to breathe life into them.
According to Deadline, Eastwood is "seriously
circling" the real life story of Richard Jewell, who in 1996 during the
Atlanta Olympics was branded as a possible terrorist after discovering a
suspicious backpack.
The project started life as The Ballad of Richard
Jewell, a Vanity Fair article written by Marie Brenner in 1997, and was later
developed by Jonah Hill, and Leonardo DiCaprio, whom are expected to star as
Richard Jewell, and his lawyer respectively.
The adaptation was written by Billy Ray (Captain
Philips) and currently sits at 20th Century Fox, which might pose an issue
because of Eastwood's long history with Warner Bros., who is very loyal to
"their" directors. However it looks like both studios are working on
some sort of custody deal much like the one Warner made with Paramount when
Christopher Nolan decided to do Interstellar.
Paul Greengrass was at one point being eyed to helm
the film, but decided to focus himself on the already announced Bourne sequel.
