Netflix is looking at Andrzej Sapkowski highly praised
literary fantasy saga The Witcher as their next original drama series.
Known collectively as the Witcher Saga, the eight
novels and story collections tell of Witchers, hunters whom at a young age develop
supernatural abilities in order to kill deadly monsters.
The New York Times best-selling books have been
translated into over 20 languages around the world, and have spawned a popular
video game franchise.
The Polish author will serve as a creative consultant
on the fantasy series alongside The Expanse's Jason Brown and Sean Daniel as
executive producers. Tomek Baginski ("The Fallen Art") and Jarek
Sawko ("Another Day of Life") from the Polish production and visual effects
company Platige Image will also act as executive producers.
"Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and
memorable world, at once magical and familiar," said Netflix vice-president international
series Erik Barmack. "We couldn’t be more excited about bringing The Witcher saga
to Netflix members around the world."
Sapkowski added "I’m thrilled that Netflix will
be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and
the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing. I’m excited about our
efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to
life."
This won't be the first The Witcher has made the jump
to the screen. The novels were previously used as the source of inspiration for
the 2001 Polish film The Hexer, and the 2002 Polish fantasy series of the same
name, which ran for 13-episodes.
