20th
Century Fox and filmmaker Doug Liman have entered the final stages of
negotiations for the director to helm the upcoming X-Men spinoff, Gambit
starring Channing Tatum.
According
to The Hollywood Reporter, Liman met with the studio several times including a
meeting on Thursday, which went well. Liman was one of several directors being
eyed to replace Rupert Wyatt. Other directors included Joe Cornish, Shane
Black, and F. Gary Gray (early on).
The
50-year-old director recently wrapped Mena, an '80s drug cartel movie starring
Tom Cruise, and his best known for having directed Swingers, The Bourne
Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Edge of Tomorrow.
Probably
due to the very public mess that was Fantastic Four, Simon Kinberg, who wrote Mr. & Mrs. Smith, will reportedly
"exercise a strong hand as one of the producers."
Gambit
opens on October 7, 2016.
