20th Century Fox has released the first images from
The Greatest Showman, an original musical directed by Michael Gracey based on
the life of P.T. Barnum, an American showman best remembered for promoting
hoaxes and founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Originally a traditional biopic, the film turned into
a musical following a suggestion from the filmmaker. "I said, ‘If you’re going to call it The Greatest Showman, you should play to your strengths and we should make it a
musical,’" the director tells EW. "That ridiculous remark cost me seven years of my
life."
La La Land's Academy Award-winning
duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have been given the reigns over the songs, which
will be made to sound like current pop hits.
"We
were clear from the beginning that this wouldn’t feel like a period movie or a
historical piece," said Hugh Jackman, who plays Barnum. “What would Barnum
do now? I have an almost-12-year-old daughter. I wanted [the movie] to be as
exciting for her as listening to Katy Perry’s new song."
Opening
on December 25, the film also stars Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Zendaya,
Rebecca Ferguson, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
