Game of Thrones director Alex Graves is set to direct a live-action
adaptation of the Chinese ballad of Hua Mulan for Sony Pictures.
In the original ballad, Mulan is the
daughter of an old warrior who disguises herself so she can take her father's
place in the Imperial Army. After twelve years of fighting, the army return and
the warriors are rewarded. Mulan declines an official post, only asking for a
swift horse to take her home. After being greeted by her family and loved ones,
Mulan dons her old clothes and meets her comrades in arms, who are shocked to
realize that she was a woman.
This is the second Mulan live-action
film currently in development, and although Disney's version is a mix between
the original ballad and 1998 animated movie, Sony's adaptation is targeted
towards an international audience. This version is a Chinese co-production with
a Chinese lead.
Jason Keller wrote the script for
Sony's Mulan, which is funny since he also penned the script for Tarsem Singh's
Mirror, Mirror, a Snow White reimagining that premiered months apart of Rupert
Sander's more successful Snow White and the Huntsman. Maybe he will find better
luck this time around.
If you simply cannot wait to see a Mulan
live-action film, in 2009, Rumble in the Bronx cinematographer Jingle Ma, and
newcomer Wei Dong directed a Mulan feature film starring Wei Zhao ("Shaolin
Soccer") in the titular role.
