Paramount Pictures is in negotiations to acquire the movie rights to the
1990s cartoon television series Captain Planet, and is eyeing Scream Queens
star Glen Powell and assistant turned actor/writer Jono Matt to write the
script.
Should the studio finalize the deal, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Leonardo
DiCaprio will produce the project via their Appian Way banner, which signed a
first-look deal with the studio back in March.
Captain Planet and the Planeteers aired between 1990 and 1992, and centered
on five young teenagers from around the world who were given magical rings,
each with different abilities such as water, air, earth, fire, and heart, that
when combined summoned Captain Planet, a superhero that helps them fight environmental
threats.
For DiCaprio, a well-known environmentalist who often seeks to bring
attention to such issues as global warming, Captain Planet fits like a glove.
It's unclear whether the film will stick close to the story of the cartoon
or not, but sources say that's not likely. Apparently, the story takes place
several years after the adventures seen on the show, with the Captain having
fallen from grace and in dire need of the kids, "more then they need him."
