Focus Features has
shifted J.A. Bayona's ("The Impossible") fantasy drama A Monster
Calls from its original October 21 release date to a more friendly December
opening.
Based
on the award-winning children’s fantasy novel by author Patrick Ness, A Monster
Calls revolves around 12-year-old boy Conor (Lewis MacDougall) as he attempts
to deal with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness and the bullying of his
classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales
that explore courage, loss, and faith.
The
film is expected to have an impactful premiere at the Toronto International Film
Festival next week since it is being viewed as a potential crowd, critics, and
awards pleaser.
A
Monster Calls will open in theaters on December 23 in a limited 10-city run
before expanding to 1,500 theaters on January 6. The move is a smart one since
it will not only put the film directly in the crosshairs of awards voters, but
also help it escape the crowded November and December months, which will see the
release of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Marvel's Doctor
Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Moana, Rogue One: A Star Wars
Story, and Assassin's Creed.
As
it stands, A Monster Calls will now go up against Amityville: The Awakening,
and Underworld: Blood Wars.
A
Monster Call also stars Toby Kebbell, Liam Neeson, Sigourney Weaver, and Geraldine
Chaplin.
