Because everything
comes in threes, Lucasfilm and Disney are apparently looking to capitalize on the
popularity of iconic Star Wars character Han Solo with three films independent
of the main Empire vs Rebels storyline starring Hail, Caesar! breakout star Alden Ehrenreich in
the lead role.
According to The New York
Daily News, the studio is developing plans for a Han Solo trilogy featuring Ehrenreich,
but they are not ready to make an announcement just yet.
"There is a real
sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential. Given that
Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story
lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They
can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new
characters. They feel that his character has the right potential to become a
central figure in several movies. They’re keeping things under wraps at the
moment, but the deal is that he has signed for at least three movies."
A Han Solo trilogy
seems like a no brainer for the studio given the character's wide popularity
and iconic status, as does the decision to for now (assuming the report is true)
keep it under wraps, and not publicly commit to a trilogy when the first movie
isn't even out.
Set to open in
theaters on May 25, 2018, the Han Solo anthology film will be directed by Phil
Lord and Chris Miler from a script by Jon and Lawrence Kasdan.
