Star Wars Rebels co-creator, writer, and executive
producer Dave Filoni has never been shy of including Star Wars heavyweights in
the animated show.
Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, Emperor
Palpatine, Lando Calrissian, C-3PO, and R2-D2 have all make appearances in one way
or another, and now, another key character is making her way to the show.
On January 20th when Rebels returns for its mid-season
premiere, Filoni will introduce a young Princess Leia Organa, voiced by Julie
Dolan (Star Wars: Uprising), who in the episode, titled A Princess in Lothal,
will head to the Rebels' base of Lothal to search for additional cruisers to
add to the growing rebel alliance. As you may have guessed, things take a turn
for the worse when an Imperial planetary lockdown ruins her plans.
"We thought we had an opportunity to show her
learning to be a leader, experimenting with the personality that becomes the
stronger more resolute character you see in A New Hope,"
showrunner Dave Filoni said. "One of the complex challenges of depicting
Leia in Rebels is that we have to remind the audience
that at this point she is part of the Empire. She doesn’t believe in the
Empire, but she is acting the part, almost a double agent."
A Princess in Lothal will be the only episode this season
where Leia will appear, and it will be interesting to see how Filoni handles
the character, and what other characters she will cross paths with, I mean,
having Leia and Lando meet could be problematic for the canon.
"We've been pretty good at bringing [certain
characters] back, not just because people want them, but because we have an
important story to tell with them, and how things cross over," he said.
