After four miserable attempts at getting a Fantastic
Four franchise off the ground, Fox is heavily betting on X-Men to carry some, if
not all, of the superhero weight with more sequels like The Wolverine 2 and
X-Men: Apocalypse, TV shows like Hellfire and Legion, and new spinoffs such as
Deadpool, Gambit, and New Mutants, which according to producer Simon Kinberg
will tilter towards a genre never before seen in a live-action superhero movie.
"That’s
more of a Young Adult movie," Kinberg revealed to Empire Magazine about
Josh Boone's New Mutants movie.
Going
straight up into young adult territory may be a bit of a gamble for Fox since
the success of this particular genre has been somewhat scattershot with properties
like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Twilight raking in the big bucks and
the rest just trying to survive.
Those who know the New Mutants probably
won't find this take on the property particularly surprising since they are a
group of teenage mutant superheroes still in training.
