Lionsgate has tapped
newcomer Saman Kesh to remake Vincenzo Natali's low-budget, survival, sci-fi
horror film, Cube, with Jon Spaiths (Prometheus), and Roy Lee (Bates Motel)
producing.
Under the working
title, Cubed, the remake of the cult film will build on what the first film
did, and add "a sci-fi survival thriller about artificial intelligence,
humanity and the birth of a new ‘digital’ race."
Cube followed a group
of strangers whom wake in a cube rigged with all kinds of deadly booby traps.
Each of the cube's walls contains a hatch in the middle that leads into yet
another cube, which once has deadly booby traps awaiting them, and so on, and
so on.
Natali's film proved
that all you really need is a great concept to make a film work, and though the
first film worked mainly because the characters didn't knew where they were,
who put them there, and why, the two follow-ups, Cube 2: Hypercube, and Cube
Zero tried to explain everything and in doing so took away the thrill out of
the initial idea.
Kesh has directed and
written plenty of shorts, but it was The Controller that caught the eye of the
studio.
