Back
on November 15, Marvel Television, Disney/ABC Television Group, and the IMAX
Corp. announced
a new Marvel drama based on The Inhumans.
Now, according to THR, a version of the
first two of eight episodes will run for two weeks on more than 1000 IMAX theaters
spread across 74 countries before airing on ABC with exclusive additional content
added later on.
This deal, having a show premiere on
the big screen, is a first, and could potentially give ABC and The Inhumans a
boost in a crowded fall schedule.
"We
think this is a quadruple win — a win for Imax, a win for Marvel, a win for ABC
Studios and a win for ABC to launch a show in an innovative way and get
attention," Disney-ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood told the news outlet.
Under
the agreement, the first two episodes will be filmed entirely using IMAX
digital cameras, with said additional exclusive content (including an action
scene on the moon) also using IMAX cameras.
ABC, IMAX and Marvel Television also intend to work together to create a
joint marketing and promotion plan for the series across their proprietary
media platforms, which would be the first such cross-platform marketing launch
of a television series.
Furthermore, THR also tells that IMAX was the one that approached Marvel
with the idea, and is eyeing other future TV releases. The impetus apparently
was the $2 million IMAX made in 2015 after a weeklong stunt involving the
trailer for the fifth season of HBO's Game of Thrones.
The Inhumans are a race of powerful superhumans with diverse and singularly
unique powers, which were first introduced in the comics by Stan Lee and Jack
Kirby in 1965. Since that time, they have grown in prominence and
become some of the most popular and iconic characters in the Marvel
Universe. "Marvel’s The Inhumans" will explore the never-before-told
epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.
