With a third season
of the acclaimed drama series True Detective in a state of flux, HBO is teaming
the series creator Nic Pizzolatto and Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr. for a
Perry Mason reboot.
Pizzolatto is in
talks to write the new series, while Downey Jr. is set to both star and executive
produce alongside his Team Downey partner and wife Susan and Pizzolatto
himself.
Plot details are being
kept under wraps, but sources close to the project indicate that it is based on
Downey Jr.'s Perry Mason reboot, which the actor had been developing as a
feature over at Warner Bros. but that never came into fruition partially
because of the mixed and critical box office results of the Downey Jr. produced
courtroom drama The Judge.
The original Perry
Mason series ran on CBS between 1957 and 1966 with Raymond Burr starring the
titular role. The actor reprised the character in a string of made for
television movies starting in 1985 and ending in 1993.
For Downey Jr. this
will mark a return to TV after a short appearance on the lawyer-centric comedy Ally
McBeal in the early 2000's.
