Warner Bros. has released (via
EW) a nightmare inducing new look at Pennywise
in Andy Muscietti's new
adaptation of Stephen King's It.
Bill
SkarsgÄrd is playing the ageless character, and from the image below, it is
clear that the director is breaking away
from Tim Curry's rainbow-hued version from the 90's and is going for something
that is both old and new.
To revamp
Pennywise's image, Muscietti brought in Emmy-winning costume designer Janie
Bryant ("Mad Men," "Deadwood), who gave the terrifying character
a Harlequin type-look that borrows elements from multiple periods.
"The costume
definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will,"
Bryant told EW. "He is definitely a clown from a different time."
"There is almost
a doll-like quality to the costume," Bryant said. "The pants being
short, the high waistline of the jacket, and the fit of the costume is a very
important element. It gives the character a child-like quality."
"If you look at
the sleeves, there are the two puffs off the shoulder and biceps and again on
the bloomers, I wanted it to have an organic, gourd or pumpkin kind of
effect," Bryant says.
Opening in theaters on September
8, 2017, It also stars Jaeden Lieberher, Finn
Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen
Jacobs, and Jeremy Ray Taylor.
