Orange Is The New Black star Pablo Schreiber is replacing Sean
Harris ("Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation") in Starz upcoming
adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods novel. Harris left the series last
week over personal reasons.
The Canadian actor will now play Mad Sweeney, "a
down on his luck leprechaun, who is having a hard time understanding how he
lost his charm and way. Always up for a good fight, Sweeney is never deprived
while in the employment of Mr. Wednesday."
American Gods centers on a war brewing between old and new gods: the
traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the
world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon
of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology,
media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon (The 100's
Ricky Whittle), is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and
traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), a conman but
in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his
forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller and Smallville producer Michael Green are both
attached as writers and showrunners, with David Slade ("Hannibal")
directing the pilot as well as any future episodes.
Also starring in American is Emily Browning ("Sucker Punch"), Yetide
Badaki ("Sequestered"), Bruce Langley ("Deadly Waters"),
Crispin Glover ("Back to the Future"), Jonathan Tucker ("Kingdom"),
Christopher Obi ("Animal"), Cloris Leachman ("Raising Hope"),
Peter Stormare ("Fargo"), and Mouse Kraish ("Superbad").
Schreiber's credits also include roles in Weeds, The Wire, Vicky Cristina
Barcelona, and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
