With its planed
August 12th release date beginning to loom over the horizon, MGM and Paramount
have released the first couple of images from Wanted director Timur
Bekmambetov's upcoming biblical epic, Ben-Hur.
Based on Lew
Wallace's 1880's novel of the same name, Ben-Hur follows the story of Judah
Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince in Roman-occupied Jerusalem. Betrayed by an old
friend named Messala (Toby Kebbell), Ben-Hur is sent to work as a slave on a
mine while his family is exiled into leprosy caves. Some years pass and during
a chariot race Ben-Hur takes his revenge on Messala, who before dying reveals
to him the whereabouts of his family. While on his journey to reunite with his
family Ben-Hur meets Jesus (Rodrigo Santoro) who is on way to be crucified. The
chance encounter changes Ben-Hur's life forever.
"There’s
something really beautiful about it, especially in the current climate of the
world, about different religions and people being at odds against each other,"
Houston told USA Today. "How do we find our way out of this, how do we
forgive, how do we forget, how do we move on, how should we treat our fellow
human?"
Also starring in
Ben-Hur is Pilou Asbaek as Pontius Pilate, Nazanin Boniadi as Esther, Morgan
Freeman as Ilderim, Moises Arias as Gestas, and Ayelet Zurer as Naomi.
