Originally scheduled
to open in theaters on December 15, 2017, Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One has
moved into a less crowded and less competitive release date.
Earlier today, Warner
Bros. decided to book Collateral Beauty, a character driven drama starring Will
Smith, for the same day as Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which
is less brave then you think since one doesn't necessarily eat way at the
audience of the other. For Spielberg's adaptation of Ernest Cline's sci-fi
novel Ready Player One, however, going up against another Star Wars film could
have spelled box-office suicide.
The studio gave no
reason official reason for the sudden alteration, but facing Rian Johnson's Star
Wars: Episode VIII on the same day would have been an unnecessary and pointless
battle, so they opted to relocate Spielberg's film to March 30, 2018 instead. However,
no date is completely safe, and Ready Player One will now face Universal's reboot
of The Wolf Man.
In the year 2044,
reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive
is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's
devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital
confines, puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop
culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever
can unlock them. When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset
by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if
Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's
always been so desperate to escape.
