It took years for
20th Century Fox to finally greenlit Deadpool, and now that he is nearly here, they
cannot wait to repeat the dose. In fact, they are so sure of Deadpool's success
that they have already given screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick the greenlight
to go ahead and start writing the follow-up.
Director Tim Miller
has not yet signed for the sequel, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox
is keen to keep the creative team from the first movie together for the sequel.
Together, Reese, Wernick,
Miller, and star Ryan Reynolds fought a long battle to see their R-rated vision
of the character brought to life, which for Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld was
the crux of the whole project.
Of course a sequel
will only come if Deadpool performs, and judging from the predictions it will.
The movie is currently tracking to open somewhere between $65 and $70+ million
during the upcoming four-day holiday weekend.
As for what future misadventures
await the Merc With the Mouth, well Reynolds wouldn't mind seeing an X-Force
movie, while Miller has spoken about introducing the time-travelling badass,
Cable, who and potential spoilers/rumor ahead, is given a shout out in the second
post-credit scene of Deadpool.
