After rumors that
Universal was unable to find a director to helm Furious 8 because of Vin
Diesel's increasing involvement in the behind-the-scenes affairs of the franchise,
a couple of reports have now came out highlighting four possible contenders for
the job.
According to The
Wrap, Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray is the frontrunner to take
over the franchise, while THR adds that Louis Letterier and Adam Wingard are
also being considered, and Variety points to Will Eubank as another possible choice.
Gray has experience working
with both Diesel on A Man Apart, and Dwayne Johnson on Be Cool, and his experience
working with car stunts gained during The Italian Job remake may give him a leg
up on the competition. However, he may pass on the project all together if the
rumors of Marvel looking at him to helm Black Panther turn out to be true, and he
decides to take the offer.
While Gray sounds
like the perfect director to take over James Wan, Letterier doesn't fall far
behind. The Transporter, Transporter 2, The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the
Titans, and Now You See Me director has plenty of experience working on big
budget tentpole movies.
Regarding Wingard, his
similar directing history to Wan could prove to be the key to convince Universal
and producers Vin Diesel and Neal Moritz. However, the filmmaker is already
attached to direct the upcoming adaptation of Death Note for Warner Bros. starring Nat Wolff.
As for Variety's Will Eubank, the director is most definitely
the dark horse of the race with just a couple of movies under his belt.
Furious 8 is
scheduled to hit theaters on April 14, 2017.
