Origin stories after
the fact can spell disaster, and they often do, so when a prequel to Stanley
Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's 1977 novel The Shining was announced, it
gave fans of the iconic 35-year-old cinematic treasure cold sweats, as well as
ammo to those usually complaining how Hollywood has forsaken originality in
favor of prequels, sequels, and reboots.
Speaking to Collider,
producer James Vanderbilt talked about how Never Let Me Go and One Hour Photo
director Mark Romanek is the perfect man for project, titled Overlook Hotel,
and how screenwriter Glen Mazzara found a way to tell the story.
"You want a real filmmaker like Mark doing it… Honestly I think people
will really be excited about it, because it’s not like ’20 Years Before The
Shining!’. I don’t want to give too much away about the story but the way
[screenwriter] Glen [Mazzara] cracked it and the way Mark
has sort of cracked it, it’s completely it’s own film, which I think is super
smart. It’s not like, ‘When Scatman Crothers was young, he…’ it’s not that."
While it's good to
hear that the Overlook Hotel will stand on its own, I feel it is naïve to think
that there won't be at the very least some mild connections to the original film
as I'm sure the studio will try to bank on the popularity of Kubrick's film. Question now is whether it will feel like
pandering to fans or not.
