In the line of upcoming
DC movies none is more difficult to translate to the big screen than perhaps the
adaptation of Neil Gaiman's great Vertigo Comics series, The Sandman, which is
being spearheaded by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Speaking to Collider,
producer David Goyer seems confident that with the advent of a new writer, the
project, which currently calls New Line, Warner Bros. sister company, home,
will go into production in 2016.
We’re just about to
do a new draft. All of the Vertigo properties ported over to New Line a few
months ago. There was a decision from the higher-ups that New Line would focus
on the Vertigo properties and Warner Bros would focus on the DC properties. So
we’re just starting a re-write with a really fantastic writer that fans of your
site will enjoy that’s coming aboard, but I can’t quite announce it yet.
Gaiman's Sandman is a
75-issue series, which is why some would prefer to see it not turn into a movie
but a TV show instead, however, considering the amount of dream-like effects needed
to make the comic series justice (besides script, cast, and director), I maintain that the only way to adapt Sandman
is on a movie budget. And yes, The Flash and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have great
effects…for TV.
