With
an October 7, 2016 release date still looming over the horizon and a director's
chair still empty after Rupert Wyatt's departure, Fox must be feeling the
pressure to quickly find someone to fill the empty spot and start production if
they are to meet the deadline. Well it seems they have found one, though that's
about it.
According
to Deadline and a Tweet by Jeff Sneider from The Wrap, the studio and Channing
Tatum, who is producing the X-Men spinoff, have started to court The Bourne
Identity and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, who has circled other comic
book based projects like Watchmen but never landed one.
True that Channing Tatum has been courting Doug Liman to direct GAMBIT. We'll see if he goes for it though...

However,
there could be a scheduling problem, as Liman is believed to still be in
post-production on Mena, a new drama starring Tom Cruise, as well as having two
other projects that he seems keen to direct afterwards. There have been some
talks about the director possibly reteaming with Cruise yet again for a couple
of different projects. The sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, which would also see
Emily Blunt return, and heist film titled Luna Park, which has been in
development since 2014.
Whether
Liman opts to shift his attention to Gambit or not remains to be seen, but
given the deadline set, we should be hearing some news relatively soon.
