
For nearly a century,
the film industry has been putting out franchises of all shapes and sizes, and
good or bad there really is only one indicator that will determine its
longevity, box-office success.
In 2009, British
director Guy Ritchie started a substantial movie franchise based on Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle's creation, Sherlock Holmes. His new spin on the iconic character pleased
most looking for a bit of fun at the theater and made the studio nearly a
billion richer, so it is staggering to realize that four years have passed
since the last installment, and no word on a sequel, until now.
While promoting his
latest Guy Ritchie film, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., producer Lionel Wigram
revealed that a third installment in the Sherlock franchise is currently being
written.
"We’re working
on a Sherlock Holmes 3 script" Wigram explained. "I think we would
all love to do one if we could come up with something that really was really
going to knock it out of the park and was going to be the best of the three. So
we’re working on that – it’s quite hard to do."
As for whether Robert
Downey Jr. and Jude Law would reprise their roles, Wigram replied that both
actor are very, very keen to return to play Sherlock and Watson, respectively.
