We have been hearing rumors
of a possible crossover between the X-Men and the Fantastic Four for awhile
now, but it never went beyond that. Now however, while speaking to Yahoo!
Movies, Bryan Singer revealed that 20th Century Fox is definitely thinking
about a potential crossover between the two properties, even if the screenwriter
and producer of both franchises, Simon Kinberg, thinks it's ill advised to have
those who by a freak accident (FF) get superpowers meet with those that were persecuted
since childbirth for having them (X-Men). Two completely different worlds, but...
"Those ideas are
in play," Singer says. "That would be a natural match-up because
they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it,"
and by that he means time travel of course.
The instant band-aid
that Singer speaks of would make the merger of the 1980's X-Men and the present
Fantastic Four possible, but would it really work, and do we really want it?
I for one would like
both to be far apart, but it all comes down to the Fantastic Four really. Is it
good? Will it turn a profit at the box office? Moreover, we still don’t know what to
expect from Josh Trank's Fantastic Four, or if it will be similar to Singer's X-Men, and that in my view is the biggest
problem. The marketing has been slightly ambiguous as to what the tone is, and the
mixed comments of those involved in the project haven't helped either. On the
one hand the film is more "science than science fiction", while on
the other it is a "slugfest". The two aren't mutually exclusive, but
it makes one wonder.
