Like most large
properties nowadays, Conan might be on his way to become part of a shared
cinematic universe after the upcoming The Legend of Conan, which is a direct
sequel to the 1984 Conan The Destroyer.
According to
Frederick Malmberg, who recently acquired the rights to Robert E. Howards's 800
stories featuring Conan, Kull the Conqueror, Dark Agnes, Solomon Kane and more,
the idea is to merge the before mentioned characters and stories into a cohesive
cinematic universe.
"These
days, it comes down to brands and characters and we are looking at long-term
possibilities," he said. "We look at how Marvel played out with its
rich based of characters, and this too is a universe that lends itself to
exploitation in TV and film. There aren’t many libraries like this."
After
the Jason Momoa led Conan The Barbarian flopped, plans were set in motion to
have Arnold Schwarzenegger reprise his iconic role. However, with Schwarzenegger's
"sudden" flair for the dramatic raising its head in the zombie drama Maggie, Malmberg believes that they could feed of that and do an "old man Conan" story.
"It’s 30 years
after the original film, and he’s facing his mortality and how a legend deals
with the fact he’s older, and how does he want to go out."
What do you think?
