Oscar winning actor Eddie Redmayne is
reportedly in talks to star as Newt Scamander in Warner Bros. upcoming Harry
Potter prequel/spinoff/extension trilogy, Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find
Them, which will mark J.K. Rowling's screenwriting debut.
According to Variety, no offer has yet been made, and though X-Men star Nicholas Hoult is also on the studio's radar after his work on Mad Max: Fury Road, Redmayne
is still the studio's first pick for the role.
Based on the Hogwarts textbook written
by Newt Scamander, Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them is set in New
York, seventy years before the events of Harry Potter and follows the author, a
magiczoologist and his adventures in the study of magical creatures.
"Although it
will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so
happy for 17 years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a
prequel nor a sequel to the ‘Harry Potter’ series but an extension of the
wizarding world," said Rowling of the trilogy.
The first film in the
planned franchise hits theaters on November 18, 2016, while the following two
films opening in 2018, and 2020.
No word on who might
be directing the film or the trilogy, but the last I heard David Yates, who
directed the last four Harry Potter films was in talks.
