Back in July when Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
premiered, many including yours truly claimed Andy Serkis performance as Caeser
as being Oscar worthy. Now that the Oscar race has began, it looks like 20th
Century Fox has plans to push the actor for a Best Supporting nom, despite him
clearly being the main actor in the film.
If nominated, Serkis
would be the first actor ever to do so for a motion-capture performance, or has
it now stands, performance-capture.
Some will argue that
Serkis' performance in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes isn't entirely his own
and that animators fine-tuned it in post-production. Ok assuming that that
sentence is 100% true, then when is an actor's performance only his own? There
is a script, which he didn't wrote, there is a director, who gave him directions,
there is wardrobe, make-up, art department, lighting, other actors, etc… all
these and others, feed the actor and help him to better (or not) convey his/her
character.
If we put it simply
performance-capture is a tool, it's nothing more than a digital suit, a digital
make-up. Glen Close was transformed using make-up effects into a man for Albert
Nobbs and received an Oscar nomination. Special make-up effects turned Al
Pacino into Big Boy Caprice in Dick Tracy, and he got an Oscar nomination, so
why not Serkis as Caeser? He gave a powerful performance, the only way he won't
be nominated is if there are better performances that push him out of the
nominees.
The Academy might be
shy of taking this step forward, but there is an excuse they can use. In 2012 Serkis'
work as Caeser in Rise of the Planet of the Apes received a Best Supporting
Actor nomination at the Film Critics Association Awards, which was a huge step
up from his 2003 nomination at the same awards, when he was nominated for Best
Digital Acting Performance as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
What do you think of
Serkis getting an Oscar nomination?
