From an epic
superhero team-up movie in Justice League to a small war drama set in
Afghanistan, Zack Snyder's next project will not be the Justice League sequel
as initially planned, but rather the long-in-development thriller The Last
Photograph.
According to THR, Justice
League: Part 2 has been pushed back to an unknown date in order to make room
for Ben Affleck's standalone Batman movie. Warner Bros. decision to delay the project
means Snyder is free to pursuit The Last Photograph, a small-scale thriller
that "centers on a war correspondent in
Afghanistan who is the only one to survive an attack on a group of Americans.
When a special ops soldier in search of a family member shows up, the two team
up, with the correspondent hoping to score the story of his life."
Snyder and his longtime
colleague Kurt Johnstad ("300") came up with the story for The Last
Photograph in the mid-2000s, following the success of 300, with several actors
including Christian Bale and Sean Penn attached to star. The rights to the
movie have since lapsed, and the plan seems to be to repackage the project and
sell it to Warner Bros., where Snyder and his wife and producing partner
Deborah Snyder have a first-look deal. The aim is to start filming in late 2017
after Snyder finishes with the press junkets for Justice League.
Snyder is still
attached to direct Justice League: Part 2, however no one knows when that might
be. As for Ben Affleck's Batman movie, it is still unclear if Warner Bros. will
give it Justice League 2's original release date, or if they will stake out a
new one.
