Whether it will be a quick
cameo or a full-fledge come-back as Bert, Dick Van Dyke has confirmed that he
will appear alongside Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda in Disney's upcoming
Mary Poppins Returns.
Speaking to THR for a piece
about ageism in the film industry, Dyke confirmed that he has joined Rob Marshall's ("Into the Woods") Mary Poppins
Returns, but didn't reveal who he will be playing.
"There was a spirit about that thing from the
very beginning. Walt [Disney] had me in, and I heard the score and saw the
scenes storyboarded on a wall, and I just knew…This one supposedly takes place
20 years later and the kids are all grown up. It’s a great cast — Meryl
Streep, Angela Lansbury and that guy [Lin-Manuel
Miranda] from Hamilton."
It would be easy to assume Dyke will reprise his role
as the lovable and optimistic chimneysweeper Bert since Returns takes place in
the same world as the original, however, Blunt is not Julie Andrews,
and Miranda is playing a Bert-like
character in Jack the lamplighter.
Opening in theaters on December 25, 2018, Mary Poppins
Returns also stars Colin Firth, and Emily Mortimer.
