As he has done in
past years, today at CinemaCon director James Cameron took the stage to talk
about the future of the Avatar franchise, and announced that he has added
another movie to the three he had previously announced.
Anyway, as of now the
dates for the sequels are Christmas of 2018 for Avatar 2, Christmas of 2020 for
Avatar 3, Christmas of 2022 for Avatar 4, and you guessed it, Christmas of 2023
for Avatar 5.
Avatar grossed just
under $3 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing
movie of all time, but that was in 2009, and a lot has changed in the film
landscape since. Thanks to every other summer blockbuster type movie 3D has became
mundane and less impressive, and good CGI is nearly indistinguishable from reality, so unless Cameron has a massive trick up his sleeve,
four big budget sequels to a movie that apparently many people seem to have
turned against could be too much.
Plus, between Marvel,
DC, Star Wars, Fast & Furious, and other tentpoles and franchises that come
out every year, is there a profitable place for Avatar in the schedule?
