After some speculation, semi-confirmed rumors, and several
pictures and videos taken by bystanders, Chris Pine officially confirms that Patty
Jenkins' (Monster) Wonder Woman movie is set during World War I, at least part
of it, we assume.
"It’s a period we don’t see often; it’s usually
World War II," the actor told the Toronto Sun. "Our costume design is
incredible. We have scenes with, like, 500 extras all in period dress. I’d
never been on a film with extras casting as beautifully done as it is here."
With that out of the way, Pine offered some details
about his character, Steve Trevor, who he describes as being "charming"
and "worldly".
"Steve Trevor is a roguish, cynical realist who’s
seen the awful brutish nature of modern civilization."
Seen as the first modern war, World War I began with the
clash between 19th Century tactics, like 100 man companies, and 20th century
technology such as machine guns, armored cars, air strikes, and chemical
warfare, which resulted in a large number of casualties, so if Trevor fought in
the war that could explain why he is a "cynical realist" who has seen
the nature of modern civilization.
Pine also praised the director and teased the emotional
and thematic depth the movie will explore.
"There are some incredibly deep, interesting and
morally relevant themes. Patty
[Jenkins] is
just directing the daylights out of it. It’s shot beautifully, feels so wonderfully
period, but also has this wonderful pop sensibility."
Opening on June 23, 2017, Wonder Woman also stars Gal Gadot, Robin Wright, Danny
Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, and Lucy
Davis.
