Earlier this fall,
word got out that Marvel was circling Fruitvale Station and Creed director Ryan
Coogler to helm Black Panther. Now, according to Birth.Movies.Death, Coogler
has begun to talk with the studio to possibly direct Marvel's first black-led
superhero movie.
While the negotiations
are far from over, it was only a matter of time until Cooger's name was thrown
into the big movie ring. The filmmaker's first feature length movie, Fruitvale
Station, impressed most critics, and won a staggering amount of wards (38 to be
precise), and while Creed, which is also being praised by critics and is
expected to follow the same awards path, it became a much bigger box-office
hit, which certainly moved the filmmaker up the list of directors to look out
for in the eyes of the many studios.
It's worth pointing
out that Coogler is a close friend of Selma director Ava DuVernay, who was at
point in talks to direct Black Panther for Marvel but exited negotiations when
she realized that the movie wouldn't be an "Ava DuVernay movie". Whether
this will impact negotiations and Coogler's decision remains to be seen.
Chadwick Boseman will
make his debut as T'Challa, aka Black Panther in next year's highly anticipated
Captain America: Civil War before jumping to his own solo movie, which has been
scheduled for a Febrauray 16, 2018 release.
