Fans of Guillermo del
Toro's Pacific Rim were surprised this week when a report came out stating that
the anticipated sequel had been put on
hold indefinitely due to some bickering among some studios regarding King Kong
and Godzilla.
Now, speaking to Entertainment Weekly, del Toro
clarifies the report and reveals that he and fellow screenwriter Zak Penn "are
still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks," and that as
far as he's "concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it," adding
that the studio just moved the release date further.
How further? Well, it must be really further since the
filmmaker also adds that he might "do another movie in the middle."
What that movie might be is anyone's guess, but del
Toro has plenty of passion projects on hold like Hellboy 3, At the Mountains of
Madness, and Justice League Dark, although I think he isn't referring to either
of those.
Pacific Rim 2 was
always on shaky ground,
mainly because the first film was not the smash hit everyone expected it to be. It
cost over $200 million
with P&A (Prints and Advertising) included, and made just over $400 million
worldwide.
