After three decades,
it looks like The Last Starfighter is ready for another game of intergalactic
war. According to Variety, screenwriter, creator, and current rights holder
Jonathan Betuel has teamed up with Surreal for a Starfighter spinoff TV series
of sorts, which if it pans out, will push the boundaries of home entertainment
by being the first ever TV show with virtual reality as an option.
Reportedly titled The
Starfighter Chronicles, the new show is not a sequel to the original film,
which saw a teenager with great video game skills be catapulted into outer
space to fight in an epic interstellar war, it will instead be a serialized story
about alien law enforcement. "It's about installing a moral code", revealed Betuel.
The series will be
able to be seen in regular TV sets but there will be special scenes that "break
the frame, allowing viewers equipped with virtual reality headsets to look
around and explore the inside of a spaceship or immerse themselves in an alien
firefight."
Although it's true
that VR is back in fashion thanks to such products as the Oculus Rift, Project
Morpheus, or the Google Cardboard, it is also true that other TV shows have
tried to think outside the box with little to no effect, like Syfy's Defiance multiplatform
narrative between the TV series and video game, which didn't quite work. Still best of luck to everyone
involved.
