After departing from Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman film
due to creative differences, it seems that Michelle MacLaren might be on her
way to direct the second entry in the Star Wars Anthology series, which was
previously set to be helmed by Fantastic Four director, Josh Trank.
While on Meet The Movie Press, Jeff Sneider from The
Wrap revealed that sources told him that the filmmaker has met with Disney
higher-ups about directing the second Star Wars Anthology film.
With credits on Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and The
Walking Dead to name a only a few, MacLaren has shown she has the chops to
tackle this kind of material. But how fair will the director do against proven
box-office juggernauts, Jon Favreau (Swingers, Iron Man), and Matthew Vaughn (Stardust,
Kingsman: The Secret Service), whom are also rumored to be up for the job?
Having directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2, which gave
Marvel the impetus to continue to develop their cinematic universe, Favreau should
be on the top of the list to direct the second Star Wars spinoff film. Furthermore,
Favreau was an executive producer on Avengers, Iron Man 3, and Avengers: Age of
Ultron, meaning he should have some leeway within the studio.
As for Vaughn, with the underrated but otherwise
brilliant Stardust, and the two crowd-pleasing and successful X-Men: First
Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service films, the filmmaker should have no
problem dealing with the Star Wars universe. However, given his close-ties with
Trank, who rumors say was asked to leave the project, he may decide not to pursue
the project.
