It has been a hard day for reboots. First Gerard
Butler exits the Point Break reboot due to creative differences and scheduling
conflict, and now director Andres Muschietti (Mama) departs from universal's reboot
of The Mummy, also over creative differences.
It seems that the studio's original plan was go for a
darker take on the classic horror film, hence the studio's decision to bring Muschietti
to helm the project, but now it seems that the studio had a change of heart and
is going for a more family-friendly version.
The current version of the script was written by John
Spaihts, but it was apparently to dark for Universal, so the studio is now
going to develop a “four-quadrant, more family-friendly action-adventure
blockbuster.” - The Wrap
So this...
The Mummy reboot is still set to open on April 22, 2016
but it may change, now that the studio is once again looking for a director and
needs to re-write the script.
